Tom and Geri Moore
presented MAS program at their gallery,
All About Art, on Sun April 10

First Tom began by demonstrating how to assemble stretcher bars and stretch canvas.
  • Make sure the stretcher bars are square with each other... then staple the corners.  He uses a draftsman's "square" to check and air-driven stapler.
  • Cut canvas from roll approx. 2" larger  on all sides.
  • Staple center of one side, then directly opposite on the other side, pulling taut.
  • Do the same in opposite direction.
  • Work your way toward the corners, going around the stretcher alternating sides and pulling drum-tight each time.
  • Staple 1" to 2" apart.
  • He uses canvas pliers on larger canvases and does it by hand with smaller ones.
  • Make hospital corners and staple down.
  • Can trim canvas at back or leave.
  • If gallery/museum canvas, staple in back.
  • If canvas is loose, wet evenly on back side... will dry tight.
  • Tom also has a stretching machine (quite expensive) which makes the process easy and very quick.

Then Geri advised us on frame selection.
Current trends in order of popularity:
1.) dark
2.) bronze
3.) silver - be careful... can wash out the painting
4.) wood
Gold no longer in vogue.
Do not be afraid to put a massive frame on a small painting... will make it more impressive.

How they select artists for their gallery:
  • different
  • have their own style
  • identifiable
  • history of selling
  • oils... watercolors do not sell in their gallery
  • no pop art... does not sell in Hendersonville
They still take 40% commission and give the artist 60%.  Most galleries split sales 50/50.

Go by and see this lovely gallery of local artwork.
They also do wonderful framing!
