Plein Air paint-out
Downtown Gallatin
Saturday, April 23
Only a few of us came out to draw and photograph buildings around the Gallatin square. Participants included Daniel Wornicov, Mary Miller-McNutt, Heidi Kalakoc, Jerry Grubbs, and Kathleen Haynes. There may have been others who were early-birds. Several stayed to a nice lunch at Larriviere's. There were a couple of strikes against a big turnout, namely Easter weekend and lack of sunshine. Many of us are good at "inventing" shadows, but a hint of good light is really helpful. Hope to see many more artists at Comer House on May 14.

Advertised as "the most haunted public square in America" by the the ghost tour folks www.gallatinghostwalk.blogspot.com, the historic Gallatin square has recently been revitalized and nicely landscaped.
Mayor JoAnn Graves' office said they are happy we will be "painting" the Gallatin square but cautioned us not to block sidewalks or access to them (DUH). I assured them we are pros.
LUNCH... at noon, let's all gather at Larriviere's on the Square, 102 N. Water. You can see their menu at www.larrivieres.com. Larriviere's is at the corner of Main and Water Streets directly on the square. Nice $5.99 lunch menu. White chocolate bread pudding is to kill for.
Some of the cool buildings to paint...
Sumner County courthouse - in the center of Gallatin's square. The current courthouse is Sumner County's third, completed in 1940 at a cost of $170,000. It was partially funded by a federal grant. It is no longer Sumner County's main admin. building.
Old building facades march around the square shoulder-to-shoulder on all four sides.
Nice old marquees - Palace Theater, Blue's Jewelry Store, Swayney-Swift Drugs, Cordell Hull Hotel.
Trousdale Place - a block off the square on West Main. Built in 1813 and now owned by United Daughters of the Confederacy, who lead tours through the period-furnished building. Nice statue of, what else, a confederate soldier on the front lawn. Sumner county Museum is in separate building on rear of the property. Well worth your time to walk through.
All of the downtown churches are lovely and old...
First Presbyterian Church - 167 West Main
First United Methodist church - 149 West Main
First Baptist Church - 205 East Main
Gallatin Church of Christ - 150 East Main
